LG autonomy: Obasanjo blames states for deliberately incapacitating LGs

OBASANJO Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed state governments for the comatose situation of local government administration across the country. He also accused them of deliberately working against local government autonomy and noted states have incapacitated the councils financially. This, according to Obasanjo, has rendered several councils disabled to perform their statutory functions. Obasanjo spoke on Monday while addressing members of a group, Friends of Democracy, who paid him a courtesy visit at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), residence in Abeokuta. The group has visited the former president to enlist his support on the LG Autonomy Bill, which had been passed by National Assembly but still requires the nod of not less than 24 State Houses of Assembly. President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the N371,532,518,887 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Appropriation Bill, 2018 and four others passed and transmitted to him by the National Assembly. This was disclosed to State House Correspondents in Abuja on Monday by Presidential Liaison to the National Assembly- Senate, Senator Ita Enang. Enang said President Buhari also assented to the Nigerian Centre For Disease Control And Prevention (Establishment) Act, 2018; the Extradition (Amendment) Act 2018; the National Environmental Standard And Regulations Enforcement Agency (Establishment) (Amendment)Act, 2018 and the Nigerian Institute Of Mining And Geosciences, Jos (Establishment) Act, 2018. NIGERIAN SCIENTIST DON'T UNDERSTAND THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS -Onu Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, said the country has not progressed scientifically, because many Nigerian scientists don’t understand human rights as specific obligations including social and economic rights essential to human well-being. Onu, who stated this, on Monday, in Abuja, at the World Science Day Celebration, with the theme “Science, a Human Right”, said science ought to be used for the benefit of societies by both national and international communities. PRISON INMATES REGISTERED IN OGUN STATE FOR THE 2018 NECO

Prison inmates numbering 35 have registered in Ogun State for the 2018 National Examination Council (NECO). The Nigerian Prisons Service, Ogun State Command, in a statement signed on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Victor Oyeleke, said the 35 inmates were drawn from three of the six prisons in the state. Oyeleke added that the registration of the inmates is the maiden one after the recent approval of Old Abeokuta Prison Ibara as the centre for the exam.
